CHAPTER SIX
AFTER THEIR ONE NIGHT at the inn, the remainder of the journey went by faster than Dash could have imagined. It helped he had someone to share it with. He was still rather surprised Helena had offered to share her carriage with him—though he wished she’d offered to share the bed the night before. Especially, as he’d gotten very little sleep and his entire body consisted of one huge ache—some places more than others...
She traveled unescorted and should never have allowed him into her carriage. He was the worst sort of rake for taking advantage of her generosity. She had no ladies’ maid, and the only other soul with her was the driver. He couldn’t stop thinking about her traveling without a proper chaperone and asked her about it.
“My father doesn’t believe in unnecessary expenses. My mother and I have shared a maid for as long as I can remember. Of course she wouldn’t be able to spare her.” She shrugged. “So, I’m alone. Admittedly, I’m rather used to that. I’ve made sure to have my clothing made so I can see to myself when needed. It’s for the best.”
He hadn’t liked that answer. The Duke of Montford was a very wealthy man. Why was he being so frugal with his daughter? He didn’t believe for a second that he did so with his wife. The duchess would never have stood for it. The maid probably saw to her needs before Helena’s. When they married, he’d make sure she had a maid of her own. It didn’t matter that she could take care of herself. She shouldn’t have to.
“We should be arriving at my aunt’s castle today,” he said. It was a safer topic than the one he’d wanted to explore. “How will you make do without a maid there? My aunt is a recluse, but she does still entertain from time to time.”
“I’ll be fine.” She lifted her lips upward. “Are you worried I’ll embarrass you?”
“Never,” he replied instantly. “It’s more that I’m concerned...”
“You needn’t be. This is nothing new, and I’ve grown rather accustomed to it.”
Dash frowned at her dismissal. He hated that she’d grown so comfortable without the amenities other ladies took for granted. He couldn’t wait to remove her from the duke’s household and bring her into his own. Of course, he still had to convince her of the wisdom of his plan. He’d hoped to use this trip to form one. Perhaps the way things had turned out was far better though. He got a lot of uninterrupted time with Helena on their trip to Scotland. Everything about it was improper according to society’s standards.
“How do you think my aunt will react to us arriving together?”
She tilted her head considerately. “I can’t say. I’m barely acquainted with her. It’s been a number of years since she’s visited London, and even then, she didn’t pay me much mind. My mother was happy to have her visit, and repaid it in kind once. They correspond regularly, but neither one seems inclined to travel much.
